How to increase damage dealt based on damage taken

I'm creating a workshop character for Rivals of Aether, which uses GML as its base. I'm trying to create a system that tracks and looks at how much damage the player has received, and multiplies damage dealt by a certain number based on that variable. It sounded simple enough in concept to me, but I'm having a lot more difficulty than expected. Does anyone know how to do this?
