Shader not working correctly without application_surface

My shader is treating the red channel on all my sprite elements as 0 (or as multiples of 8) for some reason, even though PaintShop Pro clearly shows the red channel is present in screenshots. If I enable the application_surface, thus letting the sprite elements draw to the application_surface instead of the window buffer, I can pass the application_surface through the shader just fine.
